World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to boost the gear score of an item to 700 and add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded if they are in your inventory and you take them to the Kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded for their unique stats (like a perfectly made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) while others like weapons do not change significantly after an upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to increase their numeric stats such as crit chance, attack damage PvE and damage to PvP. Weapons come with a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Additionally some weapons come with an added bonus that is activated when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a single unit. In some instances, this bonus could amount to more than the amount of damage a weapon upgrades by itself.
The cost of upgrading a weapon's capabilities is contingent on the rarity of the weapon and its current level. For example an item with a rating of +2 will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while a +3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade the gun will increase until it requires more Smithing Stones. At that point it will reset to one.
Upgrading weapons will also reroll their base stats. This is usually a good factor, but it could also have negative effects. Upgrades can make things impossible to use, unless you are very lucky.
Armor items can also be upgraded to boost their performance. This can boost the defense base of a chest or helm, while belts and gloves will boost their required strength and agility. Armor offers a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense%. This means that it is able to reduce its value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain upon upgrading, as well as the values of these stats. This means that the weapon will gain an attack damage of 3% if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. Be aware that armor can't be upgraded in the same way as weapons, so you'll have to focus on enhancing it to increase physical strength if you're a Warrior or Spell Power in the case of a Mage. It's also worthwhile to save your armor upgrades to use for armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the game, like the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you'll wear to fight the final boss as well as the Monter Parts merchant's mask.
